AirTouch video tutorials

Six short walkthroughs that take AirTouch from a fresh install to a setup that feels like an input device. Camera framing, camera tuning, gesture mapping, cursor and scroll speed, the advanced settings, and the proximity trigger. Every video has its transcript on this page.

The short version: install AirTouch, frame your camera so a quarter to a third of your torso fills the view, raise an open palm to move the cursor, and pinch your index finger and thumb to click. Everything after that is tuning: map the other gestures to the actions you want, set mouse speed so you can reach the edges of your screen, and turn on the advanced settings your room needs, such as AutoZoom at a distance or Support Color Glove for gloved hands. Most people are working inside five minutes.

How should I position my camera for AirTouch hand tracking?

Sit so that roughly a quarter to a third of your torso fills the camera frame, with only your upper body in view. If you are right-handed, sit slightly left of center so your dominant hand lands mid-frame. If you are left-handed, sit slightly right. You should be able to reach every edge of your screen without your hand leaving the camera view. If AirTouch shows the Hand Too Close message, move back or reduce the camera zoom.

Steps

  1. Frame a quarter to a third of your torso, upper body only.
  2. Right-handed: sit slightly left. Left-handed: sit slightly right.
  3. Check you can reach all four edges of the screen without leaving the frame.
  4. Hand Too Close message: move farther away, or reduce the camera zoom.
  5. Prefer automatic framing? Turn on AutoZoom in Advanced Settings.
  6. AutoZoom earns its keep past about two meters, or with several people in view.

In this video, we'll show you how to properly position your camera for the best AirTouch experience. We'll also explain the difference between manual setup and AutoZoom, and how to optimize your camera angle and zoom level. For the best tracking, position yourself so that about one quarter to one third of your torso is visible, and that the camera only shows the upper body of the primary actor. If you're right-handed, sit slightly to the left so your dominant hand is centered in the camera view. If you're left-handed, sit slightly to the right. You should be able to comfortably move your hand throughout the screen without reaching outside the camera frame. If your camera is too close or too zoomed in, AirTouch may display the Hand Too Close message. To fix this, either move farther away from the camera or reduce the camera's zoom level. If you'd rather not adjust the camera yourself, you can enable AutoZoom. When AutoZoom is enabled, AirTouch automatically scans the scene to detect the first person who raises their hand. It crops the camera for an optimal viewing area. AutoZoom is especially useful when multiple people are visible, or when you're sitting more than two meters away from the camera. With your camera positioned correctly, you'll enjoy smoother tracking, better reach across the screen, and more accurate gesture recognition. You're now ready to start using AirTouch.

Where are the camera settings in AirTouch?

Camera settings live under File then Camera Settings, where you can manually crop, rotate, and flip the feed vertically or horizontally. The Camera Properties button inside that panel opens your camera's own controls: zoom, hue, brightness, sharpness, contrast, and saturation, depending on the model. Those changes apply to the camera itself, so they carry over to any other application using it.

Steps

  1. File, then Camera Settings, for manual crop, rotation, and flip.
  2. Click Save and Close to keep a change.
  3. Camera Properties opens brightness, contrast, sharpness, and saturation.
  4. The preview updates as you drag, so tune by eye.
  5. Click Apply, then OK.
  6. Default restores the camera's original values.

In this video, I'll show you how to adjust your camera settings in AirTouch for the best tracking and image quality. Open File. Select Camera Settings. As you can see, you have different options to adjust, such as manual crop, rotations, flip vertically, and flip horizontally. Make sure you click Save and Close to keep the changes you made. For camera properties, open File, select Camera Settings, then click Camera Properties to access your camera's built-in controls. Depending on your camera model, you may have access to settings like zoom, hue, brightness, sharpness, contrast, and saturation. As you adjust each option, you'll see the changes immediately in the camera preview. When you're satisfied with the image, click Apply, then OK to save your changes. Keep in mind that any changes you make in camera properties apply to the camera itself, not just AirTouch. These settings will carry over to any other application that uses the same camera. If you ever want to restore your camera's original settings, click Default. Optimizing your camera settings can improve tracking accuracy and create a better overall AirTouch experience.

How do I map an AirTouch gesture to a keyboard shortcut?

Open File then Settings, select your profile, choose the gesture, pick Keyboard shortcut as the action, and type the shortcut exactly as you would press it, for example CTRL+L. Click Save, close the settings window, then test the gesture. The Default button restores the original mappings. Open Palm is the one gesture you cannot reassign, because it always moves the cursor.

Steps

  1. File, then Settings, and confirm which profile you are editing.
  2. Pick the gesture, pick the action, click Save.
  3. For a shortcut, choose Keyboard shortcut and type it as you would press it.
  4. Close the settings window before testing.
  5. Default restores every original mapping.
  6. Next Profile switches profiles with a gesture.
  7. Mouse Up repositions your hand the way you would lift a physical mouse.

In this video, I'll show you how to assign custom actions and keyboard shortcuts to AirTouch gestures. Open File, then Settings, to access the gesture configuration menu. Make sure you select the correct profile. I will be choosing Profile 1. Select a gesture, choose the action you want, then click Save. For keyboard shortcuts, type the shortcut exactly as you would press it, like Ctrl+L. After saving, close the settings window and test the gesture. In this example, performing the Thumb Up gesture activates the Ctrl+L shortcut. If you ever want to restore the original mappings, click the Default button. Also remember that the Open Palm gesture controls mouse movement and can't be reassigned. Another available action is Next Profile. This gesture allows you to quickly switch between different AirTouch profiles. For example, I will assign Next Profile to Thumb Right, then click Save and Close. Every time I do Thumb Right, I switch to a different profile. The Mouse Up action works like physically picking up a mouse and repositioning it. I will assign it to Fist. When I do the gesture, it helps me reposition my hand. This is useful when navigating large displays, or you need to quickly move the cursor without continuously dragging your hand across the entire screen. That's it. You now know how to customize and test gesture keybinds in AirTouch.

How do I change cursor speed and scroll speed in AirTouch?

Mouse speed, scroll tick delay, and double-click delay sit under File then Settings, below the gesture keybinds. Raise mouse speed if you cannot reach the edges of the screen, lower it if the cursor overshoots. A higher scroll tick delay scrolls slower and a lower one scrolls faster. Double-click delay sets the window you have to tap twice within, and setting it to zero makes a double-click close to impossible.

Steps

  1. File, then Settings, and scroll past the keybind list.
  2. Mouse speed: higher means more cursor travel for less hand travel.
  3. Map a gesture to Mouse Wheel Scroll before you can scroll by hand.
  4. Hold that gesture and move your hand up or down. Open palm stops it.
  5. Scroll tick delay: lower is faster.
  6. Double-click delay: keep it above zero.

In this video, I'll show you how to adjust the mouse speed, scroll tick delay, and double-click delay in AirTouch, and how each setting affects navigation. Open File, then Settings. Here you'll find the mouse speed slider, scroll speed setting, and the double-click delay under all the gesture keybinds. Lower mouse speeds require larger hand movements to move the cursor across the screen. Increasing the mouse speed allows you to reach the edges of the screen more quickly with less hand movement. Ensure you have a keybind set for Mouse Wheel Scroll. Go to File and Settings. I will then assign Mouse Wheel Scroll to Thumb Left. Make sure you click Save and Close. The scroll tick setting controls how quickly the page scrolls. A higher delay results in slower scrolling, a lower delay makes scrolling faster. As you can see, when I move my hand up while doing Thumb Left, I scroll up. Finally, the double-click delay sets the time window you have to tap twice for a double-click to register. Setting this to zero makes double-clicking almost impossible. Adjust these settings to find the speed that's most comfortable for your workspace and workflow.

What do the AirTouch advanced settings do?

Advanced Settings holds four controls. AutoZoom detects the first person to raise a hand and crops the camera view around them, which helps at distance or with several people in frame. Support Color Glove lets AirTouch track a blue, green, or purple glove instead of a natural skin tone. Ignore Eye Gaze, when enabled, lets you gesture without looking straight at the camera; with it disabled, you look at the camera first, which cuts down on accidental activations. Hand Raise Action fires a keyboard shortcut the moment a raised hand is detected.

Steps

  1. File, then Advanced Settings.
  2. AutoZoom: crops around the first person to raise a hand.
  3. Support Color Glove: on for blue, green, or purple gloves. Off by default.
  4. Ignore Eye Gaze: disabled means the user looks at the camera before a gesture registers.
  5. Hand Raise Action: fires a shortcut the moment a hand goes up.
  6. Save and Close, then test.

In this video, we'll explore some of AirTouch's advanced settings, including AutoZoom, Support Color Glove, Ignore Eye Gaze, and Hand Raise Action. Open File, then navigate to the Advanced Settings section. Enable AutoZoom and click Save and Close. AutoZoom automatically detects the first person who raises their hand and crops the camera view around them. This is especially useful when you're farther away from the camera, or when multiple people are in view. By default, AirTouch recognizes natural skin tones. If you're using a blue, green, or purple surgical glove, enable Support Color Glove so AirTouch can detect your hand correctly. To enable it, click File, then Advanced Settings. Check the box to enable Support Color Glove. If you would like, you can disable AutoZoom as well. Now that I enabled it, I will demonstrate hand movements with a non-flesh color glove. Using this feature helps AirTouch identify your hand. When Ignore Eye Gaze is enabled, you can perform gestures even if you're not looking directly at the camera. When it's disabled, you must look directly at the camera before gesture interaction is allowed. This can help reduce accidental activations in environments where precision is important. Hand Raise Action lets you trigger a keyboard shortcut as soon as AirTouch detects your raised hand. I will put Ctrl+L as my shortcut. When I raise my hand, the shortcut will be executed. Make sure you click Save and Close. This can be useful for launching an application, displaying a visual indicator, or triggering another automated action whenever gesture control becomes active. How do I make a screen react when someone walks up to it?

Proximity Trigger fires a keyboard shortcut when someone approaches the camera. Open File, choose Advanced Settings, set Proximity Trigger to Keyboard shortcut, type the shortcut you want, and click Save and Close. Proximity Trigger Area sets how much of the frame a person's head has to fill before it counts, so you decide how close is close enough.

  4. Proximity Trigger Area sets how close a person has to be.
  5. Save and Close.

In this video, we'll look at two advanced AirTouch features: touch mode and proximity trigger. Open File and select Advanced Settings. Proximity Trigger allows AirTouch to perform a keyboard shortcut when someone approaches the camera. Click on the drop-down menu and select Keyboard Shortcut. I'll assign it to Ctrl+T, which will create a new tab. Make sure you click Save and Close.

Questions about setup

Do I need any special hardware to follow these tutorials?

AirTouch works with any standard RGB camera: a built-in webcam, a USB camera, or most IP cameras. There is no depth sensor requirement for typical use. Aim for 20 FPS or higher; below 15 is worth troubleshooting.

Which operating systems do these tutorials apply to?

The recordings are made on Windows. AirTouch runs on Windows, Linux, and Android today, with macOS on the way, and the settings shown here work the same way across the supported platforms.

How long does it take to get AirTouch working?

Installing and pointing a camera takes about five minutes in most setups. Camera framing and gesture mapping, the two videos that matter most for how it feels, take a few minutes more.

Can AirTouch track a gloved hand?

Support Color Glove, in Advanced Settings, lets AirTouch track a blue, green, or purple glove rather than a natural skin tone. It is off by default. Unusual lighting or an unusual glove color may call for a specialized camera, so test on your own setup first.

Do I have to write any code or install an SDK?

AirTouch maps gestures to mouse, keyboard, and touch input at the operating system level. If an app responds to a click, it responds to AirTouch. There is nothing to integrate.
