Turn a Projector Into a Smart Board Without Replacing It

Every interactive display pitch starts the same way. Your room is out of date, the screen is dumb, and the fix is a new panel on the wall.

Here is the part that pitch skips. The room is usually not out of date. Somebody chose that equipment carefully, fought for the budget, and has been happy with it for years.

We were reminded of this again in a conversation about a European teaching hospital. Their auditorium runs on a projector setup that cost six figures once you count the optics, the screen, the mounts, and the commissioning. The faculty like it. The image is big, it is bright, and it fills a room that seats far more people than any flat panel could serve.

Nobody there is asking to replace it. What they want is for the thing on the screen to respond.

 

The upgrade path the industry sells is a replacement path

An interactive flat panel tops out around 86 inches in most catalogs. That is a fine size for a conference room. It is a poor answer for a lecture hall, a surgical conference, an auditorium, or any room where forty people need to see the same anatomy at the same time.

So the choice gets framed badly. Keep the big image and lose interactivity, or gain interactivity and shrink the room down to panel scale.

There is a third option, and it has nothing to do with the display.

 

Interactivity is an input problem, not a display problem

A smart board is two things fused into one purchase: a screen, and a way to touch it. The screen part you already own. The touch part is what you are actually buying.

Gesture control separates those two again. AirTouch reads hand movement through a standard RGB camera and converts it into the mouse, keyboard, and touch commands your software already understands. A camera is typically installed for the deployment, positioned for the room. There is no SDK to adopt and no integration into the projector, the switcher, or the presentation software.

The display does not need to know. Whatever renders on that screen, whether it is imaging software, a slide deck, a CAD model, or a browser, sees ordinary input events.

That is why the projector survives the upgrade. It was never the part that needed replacing.

 

Room scale changes the argument

Touch has a hard physical limit. You have to be able to reach the glass.

In a 40 person room, the presenter is rarely at the glass. They are at a lectern, in the middle of a discussion, or standing where the audience can see them. Walking to the screen to advance a slide is the reason clickers exist, and clickers are why nobody can do anything more interesting than advancing to the next slide.

Where this lands hardest

  • Auditoriums and lecture halls. The projector stays. The presenter rotates a 3D model in front of the room without touching a podium.

  • Clinical conference rooms. Imaging review with several clinicians around one large image, and control that does not require one person to stand at the screen for the whole session. We go deeper on this in touchless PACS control.

  • Rooms with a barrier. Displays behind glass, in enclosures, or mounted out of reach were never going to be touch screens. They can still be interactive.

  • Mixed estates. Most organizations have a few new panels and a long tail of projectors and large LCDs. Software that runs on any of them beats a capital program that standardizes all of them.

 

What we are not claiming

Gesture control is not a universal substitute for touch. If your use case is two people marking up a whiteboard shoulder to shoulder at the front of a small room, a panel with an inking surface is a reasonable purchase and we will say so.

Performance also depends on conditions. Very low light, a camera placed poorly, or a presenter fully backlit can degrade tracking, and those are usually solvable with placement rather than with a different product. Our patented intent detection is designed to separate deliberate gestures from ordinary hand movement, which is what keeps a presenter from firing a click while gesturing at the audience. Edge cases exist, and the honest way to evaluate them is in your own room.

Can you use gesture control with an existing projector?

In most setups, yes. AirTouch runs on the computer driving the display, so the projector, screen, and switcher generally stay as they are. A camera is installed and positioned for the room. Unusual configurations are worth confirming with us first.

 

Does this turn a projector into a touch screen?

It gives you the interaction a touch screen provides, without a touch surface. Gestures map to mouse, keyboard, and touch commands, so software behaves as though someone were clicking, dragging, or scrolling. There is no physical surface to touch, which is the point in rooms where the screen is out of reach or behind glass. The same mechanism is covered in how to make any screen a touch screen.

 

How far from the screen can a presenter stand?

Further than a touch screen allows. AutoZoom adjusts the working area with distance, and we have run it well past typical conference room ranges. Actual range depends on the camera, the lighting, and the room, so plan on a test in the space. It runs on Windows, Linux, and Android today, with macOS on the way.

 

Is a special camera required?

A standard RGB camera is generally enough. We usually install a dedicated camera for the deployment so placement and field of view suit the room, and depth cameras are supported where a site prefers them.

Capital equipment you like is not technical debt. The AV budget conversation goes better when the question changes from what do we replace to what do we add.
