What Is a Touchless Interface?

A touchless interface is any way of controlling a device without physical contact. Your hands, your voice, or your gaze replace the mouse, the keyboard, and the shared touchscreen. The version being deployed fastest right now is camera-based gesture control, for a simple reason: it runs on hardware you already own.
The touchscreen taught a generation that interfaces mean touching glass. Touchless is the correction. Here's the landscape, in plain terms.
The four kinds of touchless interface
Voice. Speak and the device acts. Great in the car and the kitchen, awkward in an open office and useless in a loud lobby or a quiet operating room.
Proximity sensors. The screen reacts as a hand approaches. Simple and reliable, but it's a doorbell, not a steering wheel. You can trigger things; you can't really drive anything.
Eye and head tracking. Powerful for accessibility and for headsets, but it usually needs dedicated hardware calibrated per user.
Camera-based gesture control. A standard camera watches your hands, and software turns pinches, points, and swipes into the mouse, keyboard, and touch input your apps already understand. Why camera-based gesture control is winning
The other approaches each need something: a quiet room, a new sensor, a calibration step. Camera-based gesture control software needs a webcam.
It also solves the problems that make people want touchless in the first place. Distance: you can drive a screen from across the room, not just at arm's reach. Glass: a camera sees through a protective enclosure or a window that a finger can't reach. Public kiosks. The shared touchscreen is the germiest surface in the building. A touchless kiosk has nobody pressing anything.
Conference rooms. The room's own camera becomes the controller: present, annotate, and whiteboard from anywhere at the table. Office.
Immersive exhibits and signage. Visitors control the content from behind the line, and the exhibit stays fingerprint-free. Immersive.
